Welcome Parents of 8th Graders!

The HMHS Community looks forward to sharing information with you during our Course Selection Event this evening at 7:00 PM.  For those parents and guardians who will be at the high school for the first time, we recognize that you may have many questions – some of which will be answered tonight and others that might require additional discussion.  As Dr. Priolo has shared with you, we will be working together throughout the year to ensure that our rising Freshmen are making decisions about their high school experience that will support their short and long term goals, educationally, socially, and emotionally.  We see this evening as the first of many events planned to facilitate the transition between middle and high school.  We hope you enjoy seeing what we have to offer.  If you cannot attend tonight’s Course Selection Event, all of the information is linked to our HMHS/Counseling webpage.  Finally, please consider following us on Twitter for important updates and information relative to college and career planning: @HMHSCounseling

We look forward to working with the members of the HMHS Class of 2018!

Course Selection Night

We look forward to sharing information relative to the course selection process this evening, where the focus will highlight new courses, while we share information with parents.  Current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students were given copies of their unofficial transcript, along with other course selection materials this past Tuesday during homeroom.  Parents and students should refer to departmental flowcharts and the Program of Studies to review their options.  Although there will be individual meetings with counselors, parents and students are encouraged to ask questions.  All of the materials will be linked on the Counseling tab of the HMHS webpage.

Likewise, for parents of our current 8th graders, we look forward to sharing information this evening with you.  We will build upon this experience on February 4th, with the 8th graders when we present material and an overview of the process and other opportunities they will have as incoming Freshmen.  To reiterate Dr. Priolo’s information, here is the timeline for our current 8th graders:

·         2/11: 6-8 PM, HMS Tech Lab Open for students/parents to schedule with the guidance of HMS/HMHS representatives

·         By 2/27, course selections made by students/parents through Genesis

·         Parents are afforded an opportunity to meet with HMS counselor to personally review schedule/answer any questions

Program of Studies and Course Selection

1.      Students and parents should review the 2014-2015 Program of Studies, linked to the Counseling Department's website, along with departmental flowcharts.  This resource includes descriptions of our new courses, in addition to the courses we have traditionally offered

2.       Please keep in mind that course availability is contingent upon staffing.  While we make every effort to accommodate the programming needs for all students, there are times when course availability is limited

3.       Teacher recommendations are an important resource that provides information related to students' skill level, mastery of content and overall progress in subject areas

5.       Students should consider how their programming fosters their interests while also preparing them for college and career planning
