A few days later, early in the morning
the sun comes up, Shinji and his family visit his fatherís
grave, as they do every month. Shinji carries a lantern while his
younger brother, Hiroshi, brings incense. Their mother places flowers on the grave. As Hiroshi rubs the sleep from his
eyes, he can see the sea and the mountains in the distance. It is so early that the ships have not yet set out for the day. As Shinji kneels
to pray, he feels the crisp air and remembers fishing with his father
for sand launce.
